Kiel filino de riĉa Novjorka familio, ŝi ricevis privatan instruadon. En la jaro 1885 ŝi edziniĝis al Edward Robins Wharton, sed la geedzoj disiĝis en 1913. Ekde 1907 ŝi vivis ĉefe en Eŭropo. Inter ŝiaj amikoj estis famuloj kiel ekz. Theodore Roosevelt, Ernest Hemingway, Henry James kaj Jean Cocteau.
La verkaro de Edith Wharton konsistas ĉefe el realismaj socikritikaj romanoj kaj rakontoj. Pro sia plej fama romano The Age of Innocence ŝi gajnis la Premion Pulitzer en la jaro 1921.
