Aspekto redakti

La Protonotario estas 13 cm longa kaj pezas 12.5 g. Ĝi havas olivecan dorson kun bluecgrizaj pugo, flugiloj (senmarkaj) kaj vosto (kun blankaj markoj), tre flavaj subaj partoj, relative longa pintakra malhelgriza beko (iom subenkurveca pinte kaj pli hela ĉebaze), nigraj okuloj kaj malhelgrizaj kruroj. Maskla plenkreskulo havas brilan oranĝflavajn kapon kaj bruston; inoj estas pli senkoloraj kaj havas flavan kapon kun oliveca nuanco krone kaj blanka ventro; nematuruloj estas same kiel inoj pli senkoloraj kun simila oliveca nuanco kape; inaj nematuruloj havas multe malpli da flava kape.

Ili reproduktiĝas en durlignaj marĉoj de suda Kanado kaj orienta Usono el la regiono de la Grandaj Lagoj al Teksaso, kaj nestumas en kavaĵo (tute escepte inter Paruliedoj), foje uzante malnovan truon de Strivizaĝa buntpego kaj foje eĉ uzante nestoskatolojn. La masklo ofte konstruas kelkajn nekompletajn neuzatajn nestojn en sia teritorio; la ino konstruas la realan neston. Ili vintrumas ĉe karibaj marbordoj de Meksikio, Centrameriko kaj norda Sudameriko ekzemple Kolombio.

La preferata manĝohabitato estas densaj, inondeblaj, marĉaj, ĉeriveraj arbaroj, kie la Protonotario manĝas aktive en malalta foliaro, ĉefe insektojn kaj helikojn.

Tiu nearktisa birdo ricevis sian nomon en la diversaj lingvoj kaj en la latina scienca nomo el kolora simileco kun funkciuloj de la Katolika Eklezio konataj per tiu preciza nomo de protonotario, kiuj vestis orkolorajn vestojn.

La Protonotario iĝis konata en la 1940-aj jaroj kiel la birdo kiu ĉe la House Un-American Activities Committee, starigis konekton inter Whittaker Chambers kaj Alger Hiss. Chambers estis atestinta, ke Hiss ĝuis birdumon kaj iam fieris esti vidinta Protonotarion. Hiss poste atestis pri sama okazaĵo, pro kio multaj komitatanoj konvinkiĝis pri la interkono de la paro.[1][2]
