Henry Walter Bates

Henry Walter Bates (8a de Februaro 1825 en Leicester - 16a de Februaro 1892 en Londono) estis angla natursciencisto kaj esploristo kiu faris la unuan sciencan priskribon de kamuflimito ĉe animaloj. Li estis plej fama pro sia ekspedicio al la tropikaj pluvarbaroj de la Amazonio kun Alfred Russel Wallace, startinte en 1848. Wallace revenis en 1852, sed perdis sian kolekton en la revenveturo kiam lia ŝipo incendiiĝis. Kiam Bates alvenis hejmen en 1859 post dekunu jaroj, li estis sendinta reen ĉirkaŭ 14,712 speciojn (ĉefe de insektoj) el kiuj 8,000 estis novaj al la scienco. Bates verkis pri siaj trovaĵoj en sia plej bone konata verko, nome The Naturalist on the River Amazons.
