Gere naskiĝis en Philadelphia. Li eminentis en la altlernejo pri gimnastiko kaj muziko (li ludis trumpeton). Li diplomitiĝis en 1967 en North Syracuse Central High School. Gere vizitis la Universitato de Masaĉuseco ĉe Amherst, sed post du jaroj finis tion. Li klopodis por profesia trumpeta kariero. Li aperis en televido, kino kaj teatro en la 1970-aj jaroj.
