Yarrell estas plej konata kiel aŭtoro de The History of British Fishes (2 vol., 1836) kaj History of British Birds montrante 564 originajn gravuraĵojn (en 3 vol., unua eld. 1843, dua eld. 1845, tria eld. 1856).[1] Tiu lasta aperis en kelkaj eldonoj kaj estis la standarda referenca verko por generacio de britaj ornitologoj. Li priskribis la specion de la Malgranda cigno en 1830, distingante ĝin el la plej granda Kantocigno.
