Li studis en la Katolika Universitato de Ameriko en Vaŝingtono kaj finstudis tie en 1960. Li debutis en 1961 en Broadway. La aktoro altiris attenton en 1969 per ludo en la filmo Midnight Cowboy'. Pro la ludio en filmo Coming Home, li ricevis en 1978 Oskar-premion por la plej bona vira ĉefrolulo. Samjare li ricevis ankaŭ premion por plej bona vira aktoro en Cannes. Li ludis en la 1980-aj jaroj en tri filmoj. En la 1990-aj jaroj, li ludis denove en sukcesaj filmoj kiel Mission: Impossible (1996), Enemy of the State (1998)).
