Leonto, Reĝo de Sicilio kaj Polikseno, Reĝo de Bohemio estas amiko de junaĝo. Polikseno vizitas Sicilion, kaj ĝuas la renkonton kun la malnova amiko. Tamen, post naŭ monatoj, Polikseno sopiras revenon kaj vidi sian propran filon. Leonto klopodas, ke Polikseno restu plu, sed sensukcese. Leonto tiam decidas sendi sian edzinon, Reĝinon Hermionon, klopodi konvinki Poliksenon. Hermiono konsentas kaj konvinkas tiun sukcese. Leonto miras, ke Hermiono facile konvinkis Poliksenon kaj ĵaluze freneziĝas ke la graveda edzino estis havinta amaferon kun Polikseno kaj sekve la filo estas bastardo. Leonto ordonas Kamilon, sicilian senjoron, venenigi Poliksenon.
Kiam Kamilo anstataŭe avertas Poliksenon kaj ambaŭ foriras al Bohemio, Leonto arestas Hermionon pro adulto kaj konspiro. Paŭlina, korteganino kaj arda amikino de Hermiono, klopodas viziti Hermionon sensukcese, sed almenaŭ servistino avertas ŝin ke Hermiono trofrue naskis filinon en prizonon. Paŭlina klopodante konvinkon alportas la bebon al Leonto, kiu koleras, kaj kredas ke Antigono, sicilia kortegano kaj edzo de Paŭlina, konspiris kun Paŭlina. Leonto decidas mortigi la supozitan bastardon de Polikseno kaj Hermiono kaj ordonas Antigonon abandonila bebon.
<!--At her trial for treason, Hermione delivers a heart-rending speech that fails to move Leontes. A report from the Oracle at Delphi pronounces her innocent, but Leontes defies the oracle. But he then immediately receives word that his young son, Mamillius, has died of grief, a fulfillment of another of the Oracle's prophecies. Hermione faints and is reported to have died. Leontes laments his poor judgment and promises to grieve for his dead wife and son every day for the rest of his life.
Antigonus, unaware of Leontes' change of heart, follows Leontes' earlier instructions to abandon Hermione's newborn daughter on the seacoast of Bohemia. Antigonus recalls a vision the night before of Hermione, who told him to name the child "Perdita" (derived from the Latin word for "lost"). He wishes to take pity on the child, but Antigonus is then suddenly pursued and eaten by a bear. Fortunately, Perdita is rescued by a shepherd and his simpleton son also known as "Clown." There is a large amount of money with the baby and the shepherd is now very rich.
