Le Monde's 100 Books of the Century

So it is probably time for me to try an artificial language, correct?
I have been compiling an Esperanto page, since there is a good amount of book information here at eowiki.
What would be a nice Esperanto name for the page?
Le Monde, as I expect you know, is the Paris newspaper.

Which word is correct for the "Number" (No.) column? Most languages abbreviate the word.

I think I found Nombro and Cifero in Wiktionary.

I should have checked the Teach Yourself dictionary which lists Numero for page numbers, and such.

With #, my understanding is that that is not universal even in English; it's an American and Canadian thing. Britain doesn't use it, and any European Esperantists may also find it inappropriate.

I think Numero avoids controversy. You would not believe how much controversy this page produces. Ridiculous.

I work on this page to relax, and it's not relaxing.

Esperantists should have their own country. Then the civilized people have a place to go on vacation.

I think this is the first time anyone has thanked me in 3 years.

I am accustomed to people calling me an asshole for "destroying" their language with my "arrogant" little book list.

There are a lot of very, very weird people who are active at Wikipedia, who, to me, appear to have no interest in spreading knowledge, or collaborating with people who have imperfect language skills. At times, it almost feels racist. In one case, it really did feel racist. ("You are not one of us; we hate you.")

The next time I "translate" a page I will try to do an Esperanto version since this is a friendlier project than the others. But, in the end, the data needs to be there for me to compile it.

The translation project I am working on now is en:The Top 100 Crime Novels of All Time.

In this case, there is very little Esperanto information around.

So I will not be compiling an Esperanto version this time.

Kategorio-Diskuto:Organizaĵoj laŭ fondojardeko‎

It would be great, if anyone here could fix the problem with the categories which are existing twice. I don’t know which name those categories shall have, but as it is now, it is impossible with interwikis, cause you never know, where to put them. And you don’t find the articles and subcategory in the other categories, when everything is existing twice. You should take "jaroj" or "jardeko" everywhere, but not both together. More on the discussion page there. I don’t see any difference between those categories and no system for categorizing articles and subcategories. I think that those double categories exist since a few days only, but this doesn’t make any sense. --October wind (diskuto) 20:56, 24 Apr. 2014 (UTC)

No one needs free knowledge in Esperanto

There is a current discussion on German Wikipedia on a decision of Asaf Bartov, Head of WMF Grants and Global South Partnerships, Wikimedia Foundation, who rejected a request for funding a proposal from wikipedians from eowiki one year ago with the explanation the existence, cultivation, and growth of the Esperanto Wikipedia does not advance our educational mission. No one needs free knowledge in Esperanto. On meta there has also started a discussion about that decision. --Holder (diskuto) 09:57, 5 Maj. 2014 (UTC)

Ten years of Wikipedia in Asturian language

Asturian is alive and in use.

Next September 12 and 13, the Asturian Wikipedia community of users will celebrate with the support of Wikimedia España Chapter the tenth anniversary of Uiquipedia, the free encyclopedia in Asturian. The events will take place in Auditorio Príncipe Felipe (Plaza La Gesta, Oviedo).

The first article in Asturian was «Zazaki», a minority language spoken in Turkey. That first edit was in July 26, 2004. Ten years later, more than 800 000 edits have been made on almost 20 000 articles, and numbers are growing every day with the work of tens of volunteers. And it doesn’t stop there: other Wikimedia projects in Asturian have developed, such as Wikicionary, Wikisource and Wikiquote. Managed by Wikimedia Foundation, all of them make part of a global movement that started in 2001 when Wikipedia started with the goal of delivering freely all human knowledge.

To commemorate this date, Uiquipedia and Wikimedia España are carrying out two days of celebration events so that the projects in Asturian are better known. Literature, poetry music and traditions in Asturian will be present. It’s free and everybody is welcome. In addition, Wikimedia España will have its annual General Assembly in Oviedo.

This international prize is awarded annually to a person or institution that has made an exceptional contribution to culture, society or social science. The King of the Netherlands will present the award on 25 November. This will create media attention which will hopefully result in plenty of new volunteers. Prior to the award ceremony we would like to write and improve articles on former Erasmus Prize winners. All 80 former laureates should be notable enough to merit an article.

Hello, while doing some link fixing, I discovered that many of the parameters in the cite web wrapper didn't work. I've fixed them as best as I could, but could somebody check my work and/or fix the remaining broken parameters? I don't know a word of Esperanto. Thanks! Danke für die schnelle Antwort! Das eine Problem ist, dass ich die Diskussionsseite des Artikels nicht finde, das andere, dass mein Esperanto noch nicht allzu gut ist ... - Zu dem möglichen Fehler: Bei Cianopsito wird als Bezeichnung auch "malgranda blua makao" angegeben. In dem Artikel gibt es keine Quellen für diese Bezeichnung und ich finde auch im restlichen Internet keine Belege dafür. Zudem ergibt diese Bezeichnung auch von den Bestandteilen her mMn keinen Sinn - sie wurde vermutlich von dem Englischen "little blue macaw" übernommen, wobei das "macaw" mMn falsch übersetzt wurde: "macaw" ist auf Esperanto "arao"; das Esperanto-Wort "Makao" hat eine andere Bedeutung: Makao. Es wäre schön, wenn jemand das im Artikel korrigieren könnte bzw. Belege für diese Bezeichnung ergänzen könnte. Vielen Dank im Voraus!

Tatsächlich ... Wenn man aber nach "Makao" sucht, kommt kein Hinweiskasten, dass es auch noch die andere Seite gibt (wie z. B. bei Plutono) bzw. man erhält nach der Suche auch keine Seite wie Pluto, sondern landet direkt auf der Makao-Seite. Aber danke für's Prüfen des Cianopsito-Artikels! (PS: Wo findet man eigentlich die Diskussionsseite eines Artikels in der Esperanto-Wikipedia?)

Esperanto for "cannabis activist"?

I got overly-ambitious last night and tried to create a new category at eo.wikipedia, but I'm pretty sure what I ended up with isn't grammatically correct. I wanted a parallel to so I went with eo:Kategorio:Kanaboaktivuloj, but on second inspection I think the "kanabo" ending is wrong since it needs to be adjectival. Would the proper term be "kanabaj aktivuloj" or something else? I can make the move and fix in just a few seconds once I have the right term. WikiScienceCompetition 2017

Hi! Wiki Science Competition has started, sitenotices have appeared for sure in Spain, Austria, Russian Federation, USA and Ukraine, and Italy will be join very soon with a massive national campaign.

As a member of the academic committee I did my best to reduce the gap between countries both in the composition of the juries and now in the outreach. I did inform many platforms (enwiki, eswiki, frwiki) during the preparation of the event, now I am informing all national institutions, associations and federations of science and technology I can contact, especially those located in countries without national juries, I am posting notes on LinkedIn groups everyday, and I am contacting national chapters and user groups.. and so on. That's why I am here.

We prepared banners for many countries but on meta they say it is not wise to use them all, so if you want to use the style and do one here on your wiki for few days, just let us know. In your case the banner is not country-specific so it is generic. Many people who speak esperanto also work in the academia, so why not?

In order to create a new page, there must be a link that links to the certain page. There a a few ways getting into creating a new page, one of them are done be simply typing in the potential article's name in the searchbox, then a red link of the article's name should appear (indicating there's no such article yet) asking you if you want to create this article. When clicking on that link, you will be diverted into the creation page. Another way is creating your own userpage and creating a link to the desirable article by inserting the article's name into 2 brackets as shown here: example.

User:บุญพฤทธิ์ ทวนทัย is a contributor based at the Thai Wikipedia who has created machine translations of articles and spamming them over a wide range of Wikipedia languages, including here. While the subjects of the articles he has created are (mostly) notable, the mistake of creating articles in languages he does not understand has led to extremely bad quality, probably at the level of unintelligibility. Unless local editors are willing to start a clean-up effort, I suggest that his contributions be deleted. Mi provas plibonigi artikolon pri mi mem, kiun publikigis antaŭ kelkaj jaroj iu vikipediisto, kiu ne demandis min pri la informoj kiujn li enigis tien. Li estis tre bonintenca kaj mi estas danka pro tio, sed nun mi provas korekti erarojn kaj aldoni mankojn. Mi ne scipovas korekti la verdan kvadraton dekstre de la artikolo, kiu donas ĝeneralajn informojn pri mi. Mia naskiĝtago estas skribita erare. Mi ne parolas nur Esperanton kaj mi volus aldoni ankaŭ aliajn lingvojn. Mi certe estas esperantisto, sed mi ne vidas tion kiel mian okupon. Mi volus skribi tie, ke mi estas verkistino. Mi sukcesis eniri en la verdan kvadraton klakante la maldekstran suban signon, sed… nun mia naskiĝdato subite aperas eĉ pli malbone ol antaŭe. Ĉu eble indus forviŝi la tutan verdan kvadraton?? Capitalized surnames

Saluton! Mi pardonpetas por ne paroli multe da Esperanto.

I've seen in a lot of biographies in Esperanto Wikipedia where the subject's surname is capitalized, examples of this are Ibai Llanos, Juan Manuel Santos, Charlie Chaplin, etc., however, in Esperanto's creator article (L. L. Zamenhof) the surname is not capitalized.

So, my question here is, Why does this happen?, Is there an exception to Esperanto Wikipedia's article about Zamenhof that makes this possible or something?, Or it's just that this article is violating this Wikipedia's style rules or so?. And also, Do all biographies in Esperanto Wikipedia have to use capital letters for surnames?

Need assistance in proofreading article draft before publishing

Hi. I am a budding Esperantist who has begun editing for Vikipedio and Wikidata. I have always been practicing my Esperanto writing skills, and very recently, I have wrote a draft for an Esperanto language article for the Netflix animated movie Extinct that can be seen here: Uzanto:Nekomoto/Extinct (filmo de 2021) . Though I believe I am at an advanced level of writing the Esperanto language from studying books on the topic, I still believe I can be prone to imperfect usage, such as some grammatical errors, mistranslations of words, technically accurate but awkward wording, and probably (in the case of Vikipedio) colloquial usage in an encyclopedic article. I did check some parts of it over with others who also speak the language and have more years of experience than I do, but the article as a whole hasn't been fully proofread yet. Therefore, I am requesting the assistance of anyone reading this who is experienced and willing to help proofread the article and edit it to have as much accurate grammar as possible. I give them permission to edit the page for the purpose of correction. Watching the movie isn't necessarily required, but it helps.

I have made sure to adhere to as much guidelines as possible and cite my sources properly. I started off adapting the text from English Wikipedia, but then went into much more detail describing the film's plot filling in holes that English Wikipedia either glossed over or forgot to mention entirely. I had to invent two Esperanto words for this article: flumelo, a phonetic adaptation for "flummel" (the fictional hole-bellied creatures of the film and the most "international" term for them among the film's many translated dubs. Also the faux-Latin scientific name Flummelios hidella mentioned at one point in-film solidified the decision), and makraŭĥenio, the term for Macrauchenia, a real life long-necked extinct species for which apparently no Esperanto term existed before now, and is a species in which one of the characters belonged to. Although some of the text is adapted from English Wikipedia, one small part is adapted from a section from German Wikipedia regarding a film review from a German website.

I wrote this article to help me be in more practice with Esperanto, and gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the language. I hope that by having this article proofread, I can learn from mistakes and improve the way I write and speak Esperanto. Thanks in advance for reading this and considering proofreading it. Once the proofreading process is completed, I will publish this as an actual Vikipedio article and link the page to Extinct's Wikidata page.

Linking to other Wikipedias in Vikipedio

This is related to the old inquiry I also added above.

So, someone recently removed English Wikipedia links and replaced them with (broken and non-existent) Esperanto Vikipedio links in my Vikipedio article draft for the movie Extinct. I restored them thinking it was some misguided edit (because they only removed the links to one section in particular, but not the whole article, and also formatted some links funny). Then I restored the English links, then I got a message from my talk page saying links to other language Wikipedias aren't allowed in Vikipedio. I do wonder, why would that be when other Wikipedias link to other language Wikipedias in the absence of article links in their own local language just fine, including English and Japanese Wikipedia? To give an example, Ms. Pac-Man's Japanese Wikipedia page links to the developer General Computer Corporation's English page because Japanese Wikipedia doesn't have an article for that but English Wikipedia does. In my case, I have linked to the English pages of the directors, writers, and some of the distributors (in the case of Tencent Entertainment and Huayi Brothers, their Chinese pages because they primarily reside in China) in the absence of proper Esperanto Vikipedio links, and I also linked to the English articles for the Macrauchenia and the concept of closeout sales too. In the case of David Silverman and Joel Cohen, they definitely share the same name with unrelated people too, so I'm afraid of how to name them on Esperanto Wikipedia (in this case, animator and Simpsons writer, but not the Toy Story writer). Notice to wikisyntax experts

Hello you all! https://eo.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?search=nbsp&title=Specialaĵo:Serĉi&profile=advanced&fulltext=1&ns0=1 is a list of articles that display "nbsp" in the text. In most cases, this is a syntax error. Many Wikipedia language versions use unit templates such as es:Plantilla:Unidad, or as far as i understand Ŝablono:Unuo. Expertise on this may be required for solving the syntax errors perfectly. My own edit on Siberia salamandro needs improvement in this direction, my 2nd article edit needs approval. @Himbeerbläuling: Well, you can easily communicate in German: Deine Änderung in Siberia salamandro scheint mir ganz in Ordnung, und du hast recht, dass es noch auf 14 Seiten Fehler "& nbsp" zu geben scheint. Das ist so eine kleine Zahl an Fehler, dass es den Aufwand nicht wert zu sein scheint, hier einen Bot um Hilfe zu nehmen - ich würde vorschlagen, die Fehler einfach in die richtig Syntax " " zu ändern. Es stimmt, Ŝablono:Unuo gibt es auch noch, aber " " erfüllt doch, wenn richtig geschrieben, auch seinen Zweck. PS: Es scheint dass listo de HTML-subtenataj signoj, koloroj por TTT und Klavaro Dvorak die Syntax   (geschrieben als " ") brauchen, da die Zeichenfolge auch der Seite angezeigt werden soll. Mi estas franco, kiu malkovris Esperanton ( Mi lernas la lingvon per la Assimila metodo, la vortaro de J. Le Puil kaj P. Danvy kaj retaj kursoj Gerda malaperis). Mi ĵus vidis kun plezuro, ke vikipedio ekzistas ankaŭ en la lingvo de Zamenhof. Mi ŝatus partopreni. Mi pensas, ke ĝi estas bona maniero praktiki, ču ne? Mi interesiĝas pri arto kaj literaturo (romano, teatro, ktp.) Hazarde mi renkontis kolekton de fabeloj de la franca aŭtoro Christian Palustran en la urba biblioteko (Métamorphoses, mon amour) kaj vidis, ke en unu el ili troviĝis verso en Esperanto.
