Redford naskiĝis en Santa Monica, Kalifornio. Pro bonegaj sportaj kapabloj li en la jaro 1955 ricevis stipendion por la Universitato de Kolorado. Sian studadon li tamen pro malbonaj rezultoj en pluraj fakoj devis ĉesigi post du jaroj.
Dum la sekvaj jaroj li suferis je depresioj, komencis konsumi alkoholaĵojn. En 1958 li pasigis kelkajn monatojn en Parizo kaj Florenco, kie li vizitis artlernejojn. Reveninte al Usono li edziĝis kaj ekstudis teatran arton en la Novjorka Pratt Institute. Ekde 1959 li krome vizitis la American Academy of Dramatic Arts, kie li malkovris sian pasion por la aktorado. Unuaj teatraj roloj sekvis; pluraj teatraĵoj, en kiuj li tiutempe brilis, poste – kun li en la ĉefrolo – aperis filme.
Sian unuan filmrolon li rivelis en la jaro 1962, tamen lia filmkariero prosperis malrapide. Unuan sukceson li akiris en 1967, per filmigo de la teatraĵo Barefoot in the Park. La rolo en Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) fine famigis lin. Li tiam unuafoje laboris kun Paul Newman, kiu ĝis nun estas lia bona amiko. Ambaŭ en 1973, en la filmo The Sting denove furoris kune.
En la jaro 1980 Robert Redford en Park City, Utaho, fondis la Sundance Film Institute, kiun li nomis laŭ sia rolo en la filmo Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Celo de la institucio estas, subteni sendependajn filmkreantojn. Ekde 1984 okazas la Sundance Film Festival.
